Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master University
Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where experienced game masters manage D&D games in ancient fortresses in England and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are widely appreciated among forever DMs who rarely get the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often seek advice from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to managing conflicts at the table.
In response, the coordinators began crafting a organized method to answer these inquiries, which led to the creation of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is set for early January 2026 at Oglethorpe University.
“There are countless online tutorials on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the idea was that nothing truly replaces face-to-face interaction in the company of fellow DMs, where there’s live engagement with seasoned educators and your peers who are probably in the same boat and seek to enhance their abilities,” stated the dean of Dungeon Master University.
Course Offerings and Cost Levels
Game masters can opt for options ranging from $995 to $2.5K, based on the level of access they desire with the experts. The starting package includes a choice of four workshops:
- Foundational Skills: Teaches the fundamentals of running D&D.
- Long-Term Game Planning: Focuses around crafting long-running games.
- Setting Creation: Concentrates on the crafting of environments.
- Professional Development: Aimed at dungeon masters who aim to explore more about the tabletop profession.
Every class includes multiple sessions of classwork split over two days.
“The classes are designed so that you leave with immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they go beyond recorded content. These workshops that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the following week and apply in your home campaign.”
Professional Teachers
The majority of workshops are taught by two professors. Universe creation is led by an industry veteran and a renowned campaign designer, jointly leading the skill of universe design.
Career building presents four different teachers, such as Elisa Teague, Clint McElroy, and a pioneering DM. The extra instructors is intended to provide specialized information to participants with definite objectives.
“Certain participants plan to create their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, several plan to produce and develop fresh ideas,” Carl said. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at something like a castle event? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?”
Premium Packages
A $1.5K premium package includes access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with an instructor. This constitutes the debut of the program, though the team has previously run Castle Days during breaks between campaigns at their immersive experiences.
“It would be possible to organize an full two days just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl observed. “I'm not certain if that’s the optimal application of all participants' schedule – I think the coursework and the hands-on activities is highly beneficial – but I suspect it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The $2.5K top package provides an extended personal consultation and the opportunity to manage an adventure for several participants plus a teacher, who will then give comments and coaching.
“The goal is for the teacher to assess whatever the DM is focused on: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in specific fight encounters. May I present a situation for you and obtain advice on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl explained. “Or maybe they want to obtain critique and advice on a specific world that they’ve been creating.”
Coming Developments
Responses from the debut workshop will help determine future Dungeon Master University sessions. Carl mentioned that likely modifications could include adding more office hours, lengthening the event to three days, or testing alternative workshop formats.
“I hope that we host such events regularly,” Carl said. “I would love to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in various locations, and in various nations. The feedback has been extremely positive. We’re very happy with the results so far and I think it would be wonderful to be able to conduct this in partnership with big conventions.”
