Fireworks along with a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Deal to Return Captives
The announcement of an agreement projected to result in the release captives held in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has generated joy and comfort across Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives held in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it termed a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the return of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have been returned—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, cried as she watched the people celebrating.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their loved ones.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt in the streets in Tel Aviv after the news.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “To life”, which means “for life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in advocating for a deal that brings the homecoming of everyone still detained in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin would not be among those coming back to their homes but was “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced as if she were in “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has done for us. We feel that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
However, she warned that it remained too early to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she said.
“Numerous events can happen up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who participated in the work and make sure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
