Chelsea's Manager Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as The 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Blues
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to the weekend's win against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.
The 44-year-old made a rather mysterious statement in his post-match press conference despite notching a 2-0 win at home thanks to strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to consecutive matches.
But, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and overall performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period at the organization.
"How the squad are eager to improve has been excellent and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with so many challenges, they are excelling after a difficult week," he stated.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because several people didn't support us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City manager added: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Injury and Suspension Woes
Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension problems, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.
"I truly commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to acknowledge because the work from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous what exactly prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-match news conference where he appeared at ease, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton team.
It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if social media comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
