At least 64 Dead in Rio's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
State officials said at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Rio's police stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, in addition to multiple guns.
Operation Background
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
